He was married to Joan for 51 years, who passed in 2011. They have three daughters and seven grandchildren.

He has been teaching courses about music (he is not a musician) at Pelican Cove, where he lives with his wife, Judie, for the last six years, and a conversational Hebrew class, for the last three years. Previously, he taught a course on the same subject at congregation Hevreh, in the
Berkshires.
Having great interest in art, he has done oil, acrylic and water color paintings, color pencil and pen-and-ink sketches, one resulting in a book about Jerusalem. He sculpts in wood, stone, clay, steel and stained glass. He wrote three books and many short stories.
Judie and Ari create art together; stained glass and wood sculptures, cook, bake and travel.
Ari is looking forward to teaching members of KH some contemporary Israeli Hebrew.
“This riotously funny play follows a day in the life of an out-of-work actor who mans the red-hot reservation line at Manhattan’s number-one restaurant. Coercion, threats, bribes, histrionics—a cast of desperate callers will stop at nothing in their zeal to land a prime reservation at the right table. In an extraordinary acting tour de force, Doug Shapiro plays 40 wildly diverse characters. Directed by Gus Kaikkonen.” – Sarasota Jewish Theatre

Our next feature presentation is entitled “Tango Shalom”. This comedy is about Moshe Yahuda, a Hasidic Rabbi and amateur hora dancer who competes in a televised tango competition to save his Hebrew school from bankruptcy. Phyllis and Saul Lowitt, new members of our congregation, will present this talk in anticipation of the beginning of the Sarasota Opera season.
Their focus will be on Lucia di
Lammermour, one of the planned productions.
Set in nineteenth century Scotland, the opera tells the emotional tale of Lucia, a woman who is constantly manipulated by the men in her life. When she gets caught, having fallen in love with her family’s sworn enemy, she is pushed to her limit. She decides to take control of her situation, with tragic consequences for her new husband. The opera is most famous for the third act “mad scene,” in which Lucia descends into insanity.

This opportunity is open to both KH and non-KH members.
