Phyllis and Saul Lowitt, new members of our congregation, will present this talk in anticipation of the beginning of the Sarasota Opera season.
Their focus will be on Lucia di
Lammermour, one of the planned productions.
Set in nineteenth century Scotland, the opera tells the emotional tale of Lucia, a woman who is constantly manipulated by the men in her life. When she gets caught, having fallen in love with her family’s sworn enemy, she is pushed to her limit. She decides to take control of her situation, with tragic consequences for her new husband. The opera is most famous for the third act “mad scene,” in which Lucia descends into insanity.
