Dates: November 7, 14, 21, 28 and December 5, 2022
Time: 1:30 – 3:00 PM
How many times have you heard explanations of why sometimes God hardens Pharoah’s heart and sometimes Pharaoh hardens his own heart? This class will offer you a framework to answer that question without resort to either philosophy or theology. If that possibility appeals to you, then please join in our study of Exodus 1-20. Students are encouraged to study the texts with a partner before class, following a set of guided questions. While this approach demands more commitment than many Adult Ed classes, it also offers the reward of deeper mastery. In the first four classes we will focus on untangling the multiple stories of the burning bush, the plagues, the crossing of the sea and the Ten Commandments. In a fifth and final class, we will consider the implications for how we understood Torah and our relationship to it.
Herb Levine loves teaching Jewish Studies to adults. He was trained as a Ph.D. in English and American Literature and taught courses in the Bible as literature and its impact on later literature. He previously taught Mussar as a KH adult ed. offering.
Textbook:Shalom Aleichem: Learn to Read Hebrew Prayerbook by Noah Golinkin, about $15 on Amazon.
Hebrew is the bedrock of Jewish culture. It’s the language of the bible, the language of the siddur, and the language of Israel. In this class, you will learn how to read Hebrew, beginning with the aleph-bet. You will also learn the meaning of 100 to 200 words, putting you on the road to understanding the prayers you recite.
The class is designed for both beginners, and for folks who wish to improve their reading skills. Marcel guarantees that at the end of the 12-session course you will be a fluent Hebrew reader – if you do your part, read from the textbook 15 to 30 minutes a day.
Your family will shep naches (derive pleasure), and kvell (beam with delight) when they realize how well you read Hebrew. And you will be a proud role model for your children and grandchildren.
Marcel speaks Hebrew, having lived in Israel six years. He has successfully taught this course twice at another congregation.
