Holding On Together in Community

As I write this there is an escalation in the threat of a larger war in the Middle East and Israel. Tropical storm Debby just swept through Florida and Georgia with record rainfall and a lot of damage.

We are worried, concerned and feeling vulnerable and we need not do it alone.

This time of year has often been a vulnerable period in Jewish history. We remember the destruction of the Temple, along with other disasters, on Monday night, the 9th of Av (Tisha B’Av).

In my communication and teaching since I began serving KH I emphasized the importance of connections, building a community, friendships and broadening our relationships. I said that we need to foster a culture of kindness, respect, and compassion within and around our community. With acts of loving-kindness (gemilut chasadim) to uplift one another, to extend a helping hand to those in need, and to create a sense of belonging and support for all. Little that I knew the extent of how much we will really need each other during this challenging year.

And now, as things intensify, we need each other more then ever. We need to engage with others and our wise traditions to strengthen us, support us and protect from despairing. We need to find daily connections to joy and love, so we remember that good and pleasant still exists in our world.

I am proud that at KH we are committed to provide meaningful support with learning opportunities, meaningful rituals, connections, friendships and uplifting services that inspire and strengthen our bond as a Jewish community, as well as enhance our personal spirituality. At a time when there is more need for us to hold on together, KH is here for all of us.

We are blessed to be in a loving and caring community, united in our love of learning, life, Judaism, Israel and our world. We continue to dedicate ourselves to living kind, caring, engaging and meaningful lives.

With deep and continuous prayers for mending, end of suffering, healing, reconciliation, and for all humans loved, loving and living in peace.

With gratitude,

Rabbi Sigal
