Ari Delevie Bio

Ari is a Sabra, born in Haifa. Hebrew and German are his native languages. He is a retired clinical psychologist, with a doctoral degree from Columbia U. He lived in White Plains, NY, for 45 years.

He was married to Joan for 51 years, who passed in 2011. They have three daughters and seven grandchildren.

Ari worked at mental health agencies and had a private practice. He volunteered with the IDF, treating soldiers with combat PTSD and wrote a book about it (“Coping with Demons of War”) in both in Hebrew and English.

He has been teaching courses about music (he is not a musician) at Pelican Cove, where he lives with his wife, Judie, for the last six years, and a conversational Hebrew class, for the last three years. Previously, he taught a course on the same subject at congregation Hevreh, in the
Berkshires.

Having great interest in art, he has done oil, acrylic and water color paintings, color pencil and pen-and-ink sketches, one resulting in a book about Jerusalem. He sculpts in wood, stone, clay, steel and stained glass. He wrote three books and many short stories.

Judie and Ari create art together; stained glass and wood sculptures, cook, bake and travel.

Ari is looking forward to teaching members of KH some contemporary Israeli Hebrew.

The KH Movie Club AKA the JCC , Jewish Cinema Club was started in 2016 by 4 members of KH.

Our mission was and is to show films that have Jewish themes, be they comedies, dramas or documentaries.

Now, that we have rejoined KH we would like to continue the tradition with a monthly film.
Our first offering is entitled “The Pickle Recipe” a delightful comedy.

There will be a short introduction before the movie and then a lively post movie discussion.

The premise of Herb’s adult education classes at KH is that to understand what the Torah “meant” in its own time, one needs to understand it not as having been “given” at Sinai, but as having emerged from within the historical development of ancient Israel.

This 6-session class is the first of three offerings (if possible, continuing in 2024-25), looking at the three distinct law codes of the Torah. Each sequence of classes will present sections from the Book of Kings and passages from one of the law codes, so that we can understand a particular historical background as a possible/probable setting for those particular Torah laws.

The first sequence will focus on the prophetic careers of Elijah, Elisha, Amos and Hosea as the background for understanding The Covenant Code, which was eventually included in the Book of Exodus.

Class I: Exploring the Book of Kings as History and Ideology
Class 2: Prophet & King: Elijah & Ahab/Jezebel
Class 3: Prophet & King: Elisha & Jehu
Class 4: Prophets & Society: Amos & Hosea
Class 5: Law as Reorientation: What is the Covenant Code, Sefer ha-B’rit?
Class 6: Law in the Context of Covenant: What Makes the Covenant Code Uniquely Israelite?

Herb encourages students to buy The Jewish Study Bible (Oxford Univ. Press.), which uses the JPS translation of the Tanach and is annotated by leading Jewish biblical scholars with lots of useful historical information.

Herb has loved teaching his previous Torah classes at KH; this will be his third. His classes require advance preparation with a partner for about 1.5 hours per week, so please sign up only if you are willing to undertake that level of commitment for the duration of the class.

Services will be followed by a potluck lunch.
